Seven Days of Fresh Food!
Fraberts Fresh Food for Thought – July, 2009

Fraberts Now Open 7 Days a Week

We are now open Monday to Friday 9am till 6pm, Saturdays 9am till 5pm, and Sundays 10am till 5pm.  Fraberts will also be open most holidays except New Year’s Day, Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving Sunday, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day

We are open on Canada Day – stop in for sausage on a bun and/or strawberries with whipped cream!

Summer Strolling in Fergus

Out for a wander in beautiful downtown Fergus on the weekend?  Drop by Fraberts for delicious local sausage on a bun and other seasonal treats.  Most of us in the Fergus Marketplace are open both Saturdays and Sundays – Cherry Hill, Grand River Running, Wee Scottish Shop, Troutfitters, the Interior Store, Legge Fitness, and the Goofie Newfie – come and see what the new Marketplace has to offer!

Take Fraberts on Holidays!

Going to a cottage or on a camping holiday this month?  Take some Fraberts favourites with you – flatbreads and dip, nachos and salsa, Chef Derek’s new Ultimate Nacho Dip, delicious meat and kebabs for the BBQ, fresh local fruit and veggies, or ready made meals to keep it simple.  Let Fraberts make your holiday yummy!

Fraberts at the Guelph Farmers Market

We love farmers markets!  We are trying out the Guelph Farmers Market for the month of July to see how it goes.  We aren’t guaranteed a spot every week, but we’ll try to get in as much as we can.  If you can’t make it to the store or to the Elora Farmers Market, come and see us at the Guelph Farmers Market Saturday mornings from 7am till noon.

Fraberts Family Profile – The Collins Family

Most of you have by now tried our wonderful locally grown spinach.  After a long winter of imports, you can really appreciate the flavour of fresh, local spinach.

We get all of our local spinach from the Collins family farm.  Paul Collins is a third generation farmer.  He farms along with his father and is raising three girls – potentially the fourth generation?

The Collins family grow spinach on approximately 300 acres of land along Wellington Rd 26, just north of Hwy 24.  The family moved their farm from the Huttonville area (Jackie’s hometown), just west of Brampton, in 1979.

Spinach is an interesting crop to grow – the first crop of the spring was actually planted last fall.  You can get about three cuts of spinach from the same field in one year.

The Collins family have completed an Environmental Farm Plan to ensure that they are minimizing their impact on the environment.  This program has been very successful – nearly 80 % of Ontario’s famers have participated in the Environmental Farm Plan program, even though it is voluntary.

We purchase the spinach fresh from the Collins.  It is not pre-washed, which allows you to keep it fresh in your fridge longer.  Be sure to give it a really thorough wash before eating to get the sand out!
